My Home is My Unmasking Space: House Cleansing & Protection for Neurodivergent Witches

Bells hanging on a wooden door with a candle in the background

When I bought my second house, something felt different. My first home was fine, it served its purpose, but this one? This one whispered to me the moment I walked through the door. It didn’t just feel like a house I was purchasing. It felt like mine. Deeply, unmistakably mine.

And before I could fully inhabit that space, I knew I needed a complete house cleansing and protection ritual to remove every trace of energy that wasn’t mine to carry.

Why Home is Sacred for Neurodivergent Introverts

It’s not that I don’t care about the people who visit – I do, deeply. But having people in my space, even people I love, requires a level of masking and performance that completely drains me. My home is the only place where I can truly unmask. Where I don’t have to monitor my facial expressions, modulate my tone or explain why I need to sit in silence for twenty minutes.

When you’re neurodivergent and introverted, your home isn’t just where you live. It’s your nervous system’s safe harbor. It’s where you decompress from a world that constantly demands you be someone you’re not.

And when other people enter that space – even briefly – they leave energy behind. Not necessarily bad energy, but energy that isn’t yours. And for me, reclaiming my space after guests leave isn’t optional. It’s necessary for my survival.

Every summer, I have family and friends flying in from Belgium to stay with me. I love them. I’m grateful for the time together. But after weeks of hosting, cooking, entertaining and keeping my space “guest-ready,” I am exhausted. And my home? It doesn’t feel like mine anymore.

That’s when I know it’s time for a deep cleanse.

My Complete House Cleansing and Protection Ritual

This house – my second house, but the first one that truly felt like home – required a full energetic reset before I moved in. I didn’t just want to live here. I wanted to claim it.

Here’s exactly what I did:

1. Physical Cleansing First

Before any magical work, I deep-cleaned every single room. I’m talking corners, cupboards, windows, baseboards – all of it. Stagnant energy clings to dust and clutter, so I needed a blank slate.

I opened every window and door while I cleaned, letting fresh air flow through and symbolically inviting old energy to leave.

This physical cleaning is the foundation of any effective house cleansing and protection ritual.

2. Salt at the Thresholds

Salt has been used for protection for centuries and it’s one of the simplest tools you can use. Before I brought anything else into the house, I sprinkled salt across the threshold of my front door and at each entrance.

I also placed small dishes of salt in the corners of each room to passively absorb any lingering negativity.

3. Boundary Stones in Every Corner

I’m a big believer in grounding protection, so I placed boundary stones in each corner of my home. These aren’t fancy – just stones I’ve charged with protective intention. They act as energetic anchors, holding the space and creating a barrier against unwanted energy.

4. Runes Under the Doormats

Here’s a fun one: I drew protection runes under both of my doormats. One of them? Slytherin (of course!) because why not make protection stylish? These runes act as a magical “no entry” sign for negative energy or unwanted spirits.

5. Witch Bells on the Doors

I hung witch bells on both my main door and my garage door. Traditionally, bells are used to ward off negative energies and alert you (both physically and energetically) when something crosses your threshold. Every time someone enters, the bells ring and I’m reminded that my space is protected.

6. Smoke Cleansing (When I’m Up For It)

I’m sensitive to smoke, so I don’t always use it. But when I do, especially after a long stretch of hosting, I go all in.

I use herbal bundles (dried herbs tied together e.g., sage, rosemary, lavender, mugwort) or incense and I move through the house from back to front, top to bottom, directing the smoke into every corner, closet and under furniture. I keep all the windows and doors open so the smoke (and the stagnant energy) can flow out the front door.

Smoke cleansing is a traditional part of many house cleansing and protection rituals, but it’s not the only option. If I’m too sensitive that day, I skip the smoke entirely and use sound cleansing (bells or clapping) or a cleansing spray instead. And that’s okay. Your ritual doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to work for you.

7. Sealing the Space with Intention

Once the cleansing was done, I moved clockwise through the house with a spray I made from water, rosemary and a pinch of salt. As I misted doorways and windows, I spoke my intention aloud:

“This home is my sanctuary. Only love, peace and positive energy may enter here”

Then I closed all the windows and doors, symbolically sealing the space.

Post-Guest House Cleansing: My Reset Ritual

Here’s the thing: even people I love leave energy behind. It’s not personal. It’s just how energy works.

After my Belgian crew leaves at the end of summer or even after a single evening of hosting, I need to reset my space. Here’s my go-to post-guest ritual:

Same Night (Quick Reset)

  1. Open all the windows for at least 10-15 minutes, even if it’s just a crack. Let the air circulate and carry out the “performance” energy.
  2. Light a candle or incense with cleansing properties.
  3. Take three deep breaths and consciously release the masking, the socializing, the performing.

Within 24-48 Hours (Deeper Cleanse)

  1. Smoke cleanse or sound cleanse the main areas where guests spent time (living room, kitchen, guest bedroom, guest bathroom).
  2. Refresh the salt at doorways and in the corners if needed.
  3. Visualize my home returning to my frequency – calm, quiet, unmasked.

Weekly Maintenance

I don’t wait for big events to cleanse. I do small, regular maintenance:

  • Sweep or vacuum with intention, imagining I’m sweeping away any stagnant energy that’s accumulated.
  • Burn incense or use a diffuser with cleansing essential oils (rosemary, eucalyptus, sage).
  • Check in with my space: Does it still feel like mine? If not, I know it’s time for a reset.

Smoke-Free Cleansing AND PROTECTION METHODS (Because Not Everyone Can Burn Stuff)

I get it. Not everyone can use smoke in their house cleansing and protection ritual. Whether it’s sensory sensitivities, living situations, pets or health concerns – sometimes smoke just isn’t an option.

Here are my favorite smoke-free alternatives:

1. Sound Cleansing

Use bells, singing bowls, clapping or even your own voice to break up stagnant energy. Move through your space from back to front, top to bottom, ringing bells into corners and doorways. The vibration dislodges stuck energy just as effectively as smoke.

You can also play cleansing frequencies from YouTube or apps – just let them run in the background while you go about your day.

2. Salt Sweeps

Sprinkle fine salt on carpets and rugs, let it sit for 20-30 minutes to absorb negative energy, then vacuum it up. It’s like a spiritual deep-clean for your floors.

3. Cleansing Sprays

Make your own with water, a few drops of essential oils (rosemary, sage, eucalyptus) and a pinch of salt. Spray doorways, windows and any areas that feel heavy. I keep a bottle by my front door and use it regularly.

You can also buy pre-made cleansing sprays if DIY isn’t your thing – you know me, no judgement here.

4. Essential Oil Diffusers

Diffuse cleansing oils like rosemary, frankincense or mugwort. Make sure you’re using a 10% dilution for air diffusion and NEVER leave oils where pets can reach them (some are toxic to animals).

5. Crystals for Passive Protection

Black tourmaline, smoky quartz and obsidian are my go-tos. You place them on windowsills, over doorframes or in the corners of rooms. They passively absorb negativity and don’t require much maintenance – just cleanse and recharge them monthly under the full moon or with salt.

6. Washing with Intention

Add moon water, herbal infusions or a few drops of essential oils to your cleaning bucket. As you wash floors, wipe down surfaces or clean windows, set the intention that you’re not just physically cleaning – you’re energetically resetting your space.

I also use a “magical wash cloth” to cleanse my door frames and windows. It’s a simple act, but when paired with intention, it’s incredibly powerful.

7. Sweeping (Literal or Symbolic)

Use a broom or a ritual besom to “sweep” energy out of your home. Start at the back of your house and sweep toward the front door, keeping all windows open so the energy has somewhere to go.

Even if you don’t physically sweep, you can visualize it – imagining stagnant energy being pushed out with each motion.

You Don’t Have to Do Everything (And That’s Okay)

Here’s something I want you to know: you don’t have to do every single protection practice you’ve ever heard of.

Some witches lock their mirrors. I don’t. I’ve never felt the need to and that’s fine. If the time comes when I do feel called to do it, I will. But I’m not going to force it just because someone else says I should.

Your practice is yours. You get to decide what feels right, what works for your energy and what doesn’t. There’s no witch police coming to check if you’ve done everything “correctly.”

Some days, I have the energy for a full smoke cleanse with all the bells and whistles (literally, I use my witch bells). Other days, I light a single candle, open a window and call it good.

Signs Your Home Needs Cleansing RITUAL

Not sure when to cleanse? Here are some signs I watch for:

  • The space feels “heavy” or “off” when you walk in
  • After arguments, conflict or illness in the home
  • After hosting guests (especially for extended periods)
  • Seasonal transitions (I always cleanse at the start of each season)
  • You just moved in (always cleanse a new space before settling in)
  • You can’t relax or unmask even when you’re alone
  • You feel drained in your own home

Final Thoughts: Your Home is Your Sanctuary

Your home is the one place where you get to exist without performance. Where you can stim, meltdown, recharge or simply be without anyone watching or judging.

Protecting that space – energetically, physically, emotionally – isn’t selfish. It’s not rude and definitely not antisocial.

You’re allowed to set boundaries. Reclaiming your space after people leave is not selfish – it’s necessary. You have full permission to say “I need my home to feel like mine again”

And even the smallest ritual counts. Lighting a candle with intention? That’s magic. Opening a window and taking a deep breath? That’s cleansing. Placing a dish of salt by your door? That’s protection.

You don’t need fancy tools, elaborate rituals or hours of time. You just need intention and the willingness to honor your space and yourself.

Your home is your unmasking space. Protect it fiercely. Cleanse it lovingly. And remember: it’s yours.
